Description:

**Originally Listed At $800**

South Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful presentation dish, lathe-turned from finely grained koa wood. The three-part composition is defined by a shallow bowl with a wide body and a thick rim, a tall pedestal neck, and a tiered conical foot. The surfaces have been polished to create a pleasing smoothness, and lustrous patina has formed across each component. Lathe-turning was shown to native Hawaiians around the 19th century by German craftsmen, and the skill flourished among Hawaiian woodworkers who could then create wonderful pieces of functional art like this example. Size: 11.9" W x 17.5" H (30.2 cm x 44.4 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Maui, Hawaii, USA collection
