Description:

**First Time At Auction**

North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. 19th century CE. A collection of 2 fine fragments of kapa (tapa) cloth. Before the introduction of cotton, tapa (kapa) bark cloth was the primary textile material of Hawaii pre-European contact. When backlit, the tiny diamond patterning impressed into the surface of both is visible, made by pressing wooden beaters into the surface. These thin pieces may have been part of a bedcover known as a kapa moe, several panels of kapa sheets would be sewn together along one edge - the loose edges allow the sleeper to adjust the layers depending on temperature. Size: 9.5" L x 6.5" W (24.1 cm x 16.5 cm)
