Description:

South Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. mid to late 19th century CE. A gorgeous bowl of a wide form, hand-carved from finely grained kamani wood. The bowl has a round but stable base, carinated walls, a thick rim that perhaps held a lid at one time, and a shallow basin. The bowl features three areas of old repairs using wooden ties and dowel segments that are meant to be presented rather than hidden. Prior to the 19th century, bowls like this example were made using stone and coral tools and carved from kou, milo, and kamani trees most commonly. Repaired bowls like this one show signs of reverence - they were loved enough to be repaired, and the repairs, like this one, were done with the desire to make the repair itself beautiful. Size: 14.7" W x 4.3" H (37.3 cm x 10.9 cm).
