North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. 19th century CE. A hand-carved black basalt adze blade with an upturned tang, a thick midsection, and a downward-sloping blade edge that was perhaps used for utilitarian purposes. Adze blades like this example were typically fastened to a lengthy wooden pole with reeds or leather straps and were used to shape and smooth large pieces of wood. Size: 3.6" L x 1.2" W (9.1 cm x 3 cm)
