Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Eastern Europe, Greece, ca. 19th century CE. Finely painted in egg tempera on gesso atop wood, this is a pretty icon depicting one of the holiest scenes in Eastern Orthodox Christianity, the Annunciation, presenting the joy of the announcement of the coming of Christ. The Archangel Gabriel stands with his feet slightly spread, as if he has been running to share the news with the Virgin Mary, who is seated on the right. A city rises in the background, its ornate cupolas and other architectural features carefully rendered by the artist. Size: 7.6" W x 10.5" H (19.3 cm x 26.7 cm)

Provenance: private Stamford, Connecticut, USA collection; from a private collection of a university professor, acquired in the 1970s
