**First Time At Auction**

Greece, Crete, Agios Nikolaos, ca. 19th century CE. A wooden Christian icon, carved from a toffee-hued hard wood, depicting the Virgin Mary holding the Child. Mary wears a resplendent crown with a veil draped across her head, holding Jesus close to her with one hand; Jesus wears a similar resplendent crown atop locks of rolling hair, and grasps his mother's hand with both of his. The monogram "IC XC" is seen next to Jesus, which is the abbreviation of his name, and the nomina sacra for "God" is above him; above Mary's shoulder is the nomina sacra for "Father." Both figures are inside of two vertical pillars, and a large arch with a floral facade is above them. Size: 11" W x 15" H (27.9 cm x 38.1 cm).
