Description:

Europe, Italy, Neoclassical Period, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A lovely pottery statue of a classically dressed young woman perched on a rocky outcropping, holding a lyre or kithara instrument. The surface retains extensive surviving polychrome paint. During the Grand Tour era (approximately the 17th to early 19th centuries), copies of ancient Roman and Greek statues were made and sold to travelers. The Grand Tour, a cultural journey undertaken by young European aristocrats, often included stops in Italy, where the ruins of ancient Rome and Greece were major attractions. These travelers sought to collect artifacts, including replicas of classical sculptures, to bring back as symbols of their cultured education. Size: 4" W x 6.5" H (10.2 cm x 16.5 cm)
