Description:

Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), ca. 19th century to early 20th century CE. A fine cast bronze statue of a standing woman, perhaps meant to represent the goddess Phra Mae Thorani from Buddhist mythology, who has long hair that she rings out to protect Buddha from the demon Mara. In this example, the woman stands on a round pedestal in the form of an abstract lotus flower. She wears a skirt, a long necklace that hangs down over her exposed breasts, and another, more elaborate necklace that sits on her upper chest. Her hands are spread outward in an open, welcoming gesture. Her face is serene and she has a round urna on her forehead. Her hair is twisted in a bun behind her head and she has large ears with holes drilled through the lobes - perhaps at one time, this figure had gold earrings. Size: 4.25" W x 11.2" H (10.8 cm x 28.4 cm)
