Western Europe, probably England or France, Neoclassical Period, ca. 19th century CE. A gorgeous and sizable ring boasting a thick shank with flared terminals that join the body beneath the rectangular bezel. Surrounding the crimson-hued glass intaglio are lateral bezel walls formed from gold as well as upper and lower walls formed from 93.06% platinum. The intaglio features beveled edges, rounded upper and lower borders, and a meticulously incised bust of Mars (Greek Ares) - the Roman god of war - who wears his signature helmet and cuirass while holding a spear backwards atop his left shoulder; the upper rim of his shield is visible next to his right shoulder.
