West Africa, Ghana, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. A collection of over a hundred glass sand-cast beads all strung on 6 necklace strands of twisted raffia cords. The beads are sand-cast also known as powder glass, made by grinding discarded glass bottles and adding a colorant or dye before casting in a mold. The beads have a slightly grainy texture and are a variety of colors, all are a tubular or short barrel shape. Included are 6 strands each containing approximately 80 beads each. The Krobo tribe of Ghana first began making glass beads in the 16th century before the traditional craft spread to much of Africa. Each strand is the same length with knotted terminal tips. Size of necklace doubled: 24" L (61 cm); average bead size: 0.3" L x 0.25" W (0.8 cm x 0.6 cm)

  • Condition: Minor fraying to raffia cords, and these could be restrung with more secure cords or chains. Nicks, chips, and surface abrasions to beads, but intact and generally good condition.
