Description:

Anonymous (French, 19th century). "Still Life with Fruit" oil on canvas, ca. late 19th century. Signed "Detenry" at lower right. A beautiful still life painting featuring a gathering of 3 apples, bunches of grapes, and a green leaf, perhaps of lettuce, all on a silver platter. The artist uses paint generously, layering the oils to portray light and texture, while the clear, open brush strokes are reminiscent of Post Impressionism and the reflective light on the metal plate contrasts the deep burgundy of the background. Finely rendered, this elegant composition is set in a custom frame with a suspension wire on the verso for easy display. Size of painting: 15.5" W x 12" H (39.4 cm x 30.5 cm); of frame: 21" W x 17.5" H (53.3 cm x 44.4 cm)

Provenance: private Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA collection; ex-J.J. Cunningham Gallery, Denver, Colorado, USA
