Description:

Europe, France, artist Jean-Frederic Maximilien de Waldeck (French, 1766 to 1875), lithographer Gilbert, ca. 1860 CE. A tinted stone lithograph depicting a bas-relief carved tablet in the "Temple of the Lion" as drawn by Jean-Frederic Maximilien de Waldeck, a French artist, antiquarian, explorer, and cartographer. Waldeck's nation of origin is difficult to ascertain, because he loved to maintain an air of mystery. Reports vary, stating that he was born in Paris, Vienna, or Prague. Waldeck claimed to be a Count and at times a Duke or a Baron; not one of these titles is verifiable. He is remembered for his explorations of Mexico and the resulting depictions of Mayan and Aztec monuments. This said, just as he relished in embellishing the truth with regard to his own identity, his illustrations furthered false misconceptions about Pre-Columbian cultures. Charles Etienne Brasseur de Bourbourg chose Waldeck's depictions of Palenque to illustrate his "Monuments Anciens du Mexique" (1866). Size: 17.25" L x 12" W (43.8 cm x 30.5 cm); 24.5" L x 19.375" W (62.2 cm x 49.2 cm) framed
