Description:

France, Paris, late 19th century CE (post 1878). A fine boulle mantel clock with red "tortoiseshell" veneer, brass inlays, and ormulu flourishes, in the waisted form, with inset ceramic roman numerals. It has a twin barreled bell striking movement with an anchor escapement; this is protected by a small, twist-handled door on the back. Tiny numbers showing each second are around the gilded face, and the face also features a profile bust, decorative trumpets, and what may be a small crest. The bottom of the clock face has tiny black letters, saying "Delettrez, Paris" and the pendulum is also stamped "DELETTREZ A PARIS". Jean-Baptiste Delettrez (1 May 1816 – 25 May 1887) was a renowned Parisian clock maker who, from 1851 to 1871, worked with a partner, Achille Brocot, to create innovative styles of clocks, leading to their firm winning a 1st class prize at the Paris World Exposition of 1857. Unfortunately in 1878, Brocot died, and Delettrez carried on alone, producing beautiful mantle clocks like this one that struck the hour and half hours. Size: 4.9" L x 9" W x 13.6" H (12.4 cm x 22.9 cm x 34.5 cm)

This type of clock is known as la Pendule de Paris, a type of table or mantel clock developed by Parisian clockmakers around the year 1810. The production of these clocks became a highly industrialized process, with many of the parts (but not the inner workings of the clock) being manufactured in Provence to designs from Paris. This was a reflection of the rise of a "mass market" of consumers wealthy enough to afford larger quantities of luxury items than before. The Parisian clockmakers, like Delettrez, still had to put together the clock from the manufactured parts and build its actual time keeping machinery.
