Description:

Native American / First Nations, Canada, Great Lakes Region, Anishinaabe culture, possibly Chippewa (Ojibwe) / Ho-Chunk (Winnebago), ca. late 19th century CE. This stunning antique bandolier bag features cotton cloth and red felt adorned with thousands of glass seed beads in floral patterns. The front of the strap and pocket are covered with loom-woven beads, while the red cloth above the pocket showcases embroidery beading, creating organic, scrolling floral designs. A brass chain and yarn tassels embellish the strap and lower edge of the pocket. This bag is known as an "aazhooningwa'on" meaning "worn across the shoulder" in the Ojibwe language and was inspired by bags carried by European soldiers armed with rifles to store ammunition cartridges. The beadwork was done by women while men generally wore the finished piece across one shoulder and resting at their hip as symbols of wealth and status, like a decorative sash. Size of bandolier: 36" L x 12" W (91.4 cm x 30.5 cm); acrylic case: Size: 16" L x 2" W x 39" H (40.6 cm x 5.1 cm x 99.1 cm)
