Description:

Oceania, Fiji Islands, ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful war club, hand-carved from a caramel-hued hard wood, with a unique presentation. The club is defined by its thick handle and flared butt end, a wide neck with a central ridge on each side, and a wide, hammer-shaped striking head with thin but sturdy edges. Both sides of the neck and head are carved with dense linear, curvilinear, and triangular motifs and are inlaid with chalky-white clay or pigment. Typical examples of Fijian war clubs have slender necks which gradually widen to their striking heads, making this over-wide example one of exceptional rarity! Size: 10.875" W x 22.125" H (27.6 cm x 56.2 cm).
