Description:

**Originally Listed At $500**

Oceania, Polynesia, Fiji Islands, ca. 19th century CE. A wooden club carved from a root and tree burl and inlaid with wood spikes, used as a throwing club known in Fiji as a ula or "I ula tavatava." Atop the bulbous head and along the handle are layers of pitch that are hardened into protective surface. Burl wood was prized when creating wooden weaponry, as the incongruous wood graining imbues the club head with far greater density and structural integrity. Ula clubs could be used in two main ways: thrown in a high arc in battle to come crashing down with deadly force on the enemy. Size: 25" L x 6.5" W (63.5 cm x 16.5 cm)

Provenance: private San Francisco, California, USA collection, acquired 1970s to 2000s
