Oceania, Melanesia, Fiji, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A wooden pedestal dish, carved from a single piece in the form of a bird, the surface lustrous and smooth. Effigy vessels were treasured by Fijian society and were often used during ceremonies to serve yaqona (kava in Tongan), is a psychoactive beverage made from the stems and roots of the pepper bush Piper methysticum, mixed with water, then consumed to enter a relaxing trance state.
