Description:

Oceania, Polynesia, Fijian Islands, ca. second half of the 19th century CE. A lovely example of a ritual cup formed from the shaved shell of a coconut. The vessel is defined by a round but stable base, smooth walls, and a thin rim surrounding the shallow basin. Cups like this example were used during royal dinners and celebratory occasions, though their main use was for ritually consuming the kava kava drink. Size: 4" W x 1.5" H (10.2 cm x 3.8 cm)
