Western Europe, possibly France or Spain, ca. 19th century CE. A fabulous pair of hand-carved wood decorations, each featuring a relief of St. George battling the dragon and painted in hues of emerald, cobalt, marigold, crimson, violet, lemon yellow, black and white. Both figures are on horseback facing left, as they plunge a lengthy spear into the mouth of their respective dragons, and their noble steeds trample each beast. Each carving presents our hero dressed in armor with a large cape that flares out behind him, ending where the petite princess stands with hands together. The larger piece displays a pair of lovely floral motifs that flank the main scene, suggesting that this sculpture was previously part of a larger decorative program. Size of largest: 15.1" L x 6.3" H (38.4 cm x 16 cm)

Provenance: ex-private collection of actor Anthony Quinn and his wife Katherine, Bristol, Rhode Island, USA acquired prior to 2000
