Description:

Europe, ca. 19th century CE. A repousse, eighty-percent silver, shallow tray with a Bacchic scene of youthful female nudes frolicking in a bucolic woodland with a satyr. Strategically-placed leaves and vines keep the women relatively modest, while the satyr is depicted with one hand on the breast of one of the women in the foreground, his head thrown back as he eats a large cluster of grapes that he holds above his head. Around the border of this scene - on the rim of the tray - are large, repeated motifs of fruit, including grapes, oranges, and pears. The scene is one of abandon and plenty, with the wildness of the forest and the presence of a tipped-over amphora and several chalices contributing to the theme of drunken delights. Size: 19.85" W x 15" H (50.4 cm x 38.1 cm) (1100 g)
