Description:

Europe, Italy or France, ca. 19th century CE. A very large Neoclassical / Victorian era shell cameo depicting a hoplite soldier and set in a rose gold brooch. The cameo depicts a 3/4 profile portrait of a Greek hoplite wearing traditional helmet and carrying a shield and spear. In addition to the fine carving, the inherent beauty of the shell with its rosy pink, coral, and white hues is impressive. Pin set on verso and chain connecting pin to upper border of setting for attachment and/or suspension. Size: cameo measures 1.75" L x 1.375" W (4.4 cm x 3.5 cm); Total Weight: 11.6 grams

The hoplites were heavily armed foot soldiers of ancient Greece. Athens mandated that all 18 to 20 year olds participate in military service; however, during times of war, all male citizens through the age of 60 could be asked to serve.
