Description:

Western Europe, Austria or Germany, ca. late 19th century CE. A stunning horn and brass cornucopia that undoubtably graced the table or entry foyer of a grand estate! The hollow horn is mounted on a brass filigree stand with Baroque style brass fittings along the length, tip, and around the open mouth. The domed base is inlaid with cabochon and faceted glass of red, blue, and green hues and presumably petite pearls while the removable lid has robin egg blue glass inlays. This openwork lid cover and base were added later than the rest of the brass fittings but compliment the lavish nature of this cornucopia that represented abundance. Usually, the centerpiece of a feast and an iconic emblem of Thanksgiving in the United States, cornucopias were popular motifs in the 19th century to symbolize a generous and fortunate host, vestiges of the drinking horns from classical antiquity and Viking eras. Size: 18" L x 6.5" W x 14" H (45.7 cm x 16.5 cm x 35.6 cm)
