Description:

Europe, 19th century. A lovely enameled roundel with a portrait of Elisabeth of Austria (1554-1592), who was Queen of France from 1570 to 1574 as the wife of King Charles IX, and daughter of Holy Roman Emperor Maximillian II of Austria and Infanta Maria of Spain, wife of King Charles IX of France. Here she is depicted in high style as a member of the House of Habsburg, quite similar to the likeness of a portrait painted by Francois Clouet ca. 1571 at the Louvre, Paris. This portrait presents her as a grand lady with a pulled back blonde coiffure beneath a bejeweled headdress and a high enclosed neckline with ruff/collar. Her garment is ruby red and gold with puffy sleeves that are further embellished with large white motifs to perhaps represent stones or appliques, and an aqua blue bodice adorned with a gold cross to represent her devout faith surrounded by elaborate gold flourishes. Size: 3.25" in diameter (8.3 cm)
