Description:

**Originally Listed At $500**

European, Western, probably France, Germany, or England, ca. 19th century CE. An elegant double-sided dress sword with a long slender blade of carbon steel and an intricately decorated brass hilt. The impressive blade has a short tip, a raised central ridge, slanted sides, and a flat square at its base. Boasting a hue of dark gold with hints of verdant green patina, the hilt features a flat rectangular crossguard enhanced by two long wings on either side that curve upward, one larger outer wing that widens towards its end, and a second inner tubular wing that rises from the other, curves towards the sword, and ends in a flared rim and spherical finial. Below, the bulbous wooden handle is decoratively wrapped in brass wire and is capped by an elliptical pommel featuring a hexagonal bolt at its base. Size: 31.75" L x 5.375" W (80.6 cm x 13.7 cm)

Thinner and more decorative than a battle sword, this dress sword (or smallsword) would have been displayed in a wealthy home with a suit of armor or alone, as an artistic piece in its own right.
