Eastern Africa, Horn of Africa, Ethiopia, Amharic or Tigrinya peoples, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A lovely wooden triptych featuring ivory relief imagery of Virgo Lactans or Mary nursing Jesus on the central panel, flanked by a male saint on each side panel. The Virgin gazes outward at the viewer from heavy lidded eyes, draped in her traditional mantle as she holds her breast to the face of the Christ child. The 2 robed saints each hold a scroll as they stand to either side. Size (open): 11" W x 9.25" H (27.9 cm x 23.5 cm); (closed): 5.5" W x 9.25" H (14 cm x 23.5 cm)
