Description:

Horn of Africa, Ethiopia, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A fine cattle hide shield of a broad, hat-like form with a protruding central peak and an everted rim. Worked across the obverse are dense linear-patterned rings with concentric stripes, alternating triangles, and dense crosshatch motifs. A thick horizontal handle is secured to the shield via two pairs of frontal perforations and enables its deft movement. The dark brown front is lined on the verso with soft tan hide. Size: 14.625" W x 4.625" H (37.1 cm x 11.7 cm)
