Description:

Eastern Africa, Horn of Africa, Ethiopia, Amharic of Tigrinya peoples, ca. 19th century CE. An enormous vellum parchment scroll written in black and red ink and known as a scroll of healing. Atop the scroll is a standing depiction of the archangel Phanuel who wields a sword in one hand while grasping his sheath in the other, and the middle image depicts an Amharic healing symbol known as the 'Net of Solomon.' Healing scrolls like this example are typically written by unordained priests known as dabtara as a physical means of warding off negative energy and illness caused by dark magic or spirits.
