John Sartain (British/American, 1808-1897) and William E. Tucker (American, 1801-1857) after Thomas Sully, Jr. (1808-1897). Mezzotint and stipple on cream wove paper. Ca. 1850s. An original engraving of the 9th President of the United States, William Henry Harrison. In the full-length portrait, he wears a fine suit and cloak over a white shirt with a black cravat, and stands proudly before a colonnade, holding a document, facing right, with a writing table and billowing curtain to his right, and the White House in the distance. Sartain is known as the "father of mezzotint engraving" in the United States. He popularized this sophisticated printmaking process when he emigrated to the US from England in 1830. Notice the rich textural quality of Sartain's work; it certainly makes for a beautiful aesthetic quality. William E. Tucker was a Philadelphian who had a strong reputation for his fine engraving technique as well. Size: 22.5" L x 16" W (57.2 cm x 40.6 cm)
