Description:

Western Europe, England, ca. mid-19th century CE. A wonderful double-barrel shotgun used for big game or large fowl hunting. Each side of the forestock houses a percussion firing mechanism, and two corresponding triggers are secured within an ovoid guard. Fine foliate motifs are etched onto the lock plate, hammers, and barrel, and the name "Manton" - indicative of firearms manufacturer Joseph Manton - is visible on both lock plates. Two cylindrical barrels are stabilized with a central bar on top, and a wide-headed ram rod is held in two slots below. The thick backstock enables the wielder to fire the shotgun with accuracy and confidence, and an incised crosshatch pattern on the back stock provides for increased grip. Wonderful patina covers the entire weapon. Size (shotgun): 48.5" L (123.2 cm); length of each barrel: 32.1" L (81.5 cm).
