Northwestern Europe, England, London, ca. early to mid-19th century CE. A pair of boxwood, ebony, brass, and elephant ivory clarinets made by instrument makers Thomas Key and G. Astor & Co. The instrument is marked on the upper and lower joints with the maker mark and on the bell with the full "G. ASTER & CO. / 79 / CORNHILL LONDON" with the unicorn head emblem. The other clarinet is stamped with maker marks and the bell contains the full mark: "KEY / LONDON / CHARING CROSS" and the unicorn head emblem. This maker, Thomas Key, worked at 20 Charing Cross between 1815 and 1840. The clarinet underwent many changes in the 19th century - everything from materials, number of keys, size, and tone were adjusted - note the differences between just these two! Size (Astor clarinet): 23.5" L x 2.75" W (59.7 cm x 7 cm); (Key clarinet): 26" L x 3" W (66 cm x 7.6 cm)

This is an ESA antique exempt piece of ivory and cannot be sold internationally or to anyone residing in the states of California, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, and Washington. We guarantee that the piece is over 100 years old.

  • Condition: Both are fair condition. The Astor clarinet has repairs and resin infill to stable fissure on barrel and surface abrasions to the wood. Losses and chips to wood on bell along the ivory rim, with areas of resin infill. Mouth cap has stable fissure from rim. Key clarinet is also fair to good condition, with stable fissure on barrel and infill with resin. Losses to keypads and several keys are stiff and do not articulate. Both have not been tested for playing functionality.
