Description:

Northwestern Europe, England & France, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A collection of three wood and brass wind instruments: a flute, and 2 flageolets. The flageolet is a lesser-known instrument, like a recorder and flute, which fell out of fashion and use by the early 20th century when they were largely replaced by tin whistles in orchestras. The flute is made from wood with nickel-silver joints and keys, and no discernable maker marks. The honey-colored wood flageolet features a bone mouthpiece and with brass keys and joints. The other flageolet is stamped with the maker "F. Besson / London" and has a lovely nacre mouthpiece and brass keys. Size of flute: 26.5" L x 1.25" W (67.3 cm x 3.2 cm)

Provenance: ex-Stein collection, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, USA, acquired prior to 2010
