Western Europe or North America, England or United States, ca. early 19th century CE. A beautiful telescope with a collapsible, five-chambered body, a discoid eye piece with a petite swiveling cover, a removable lens cap, and a leather wrap with a bound strap on the front. The body is secured within an adjustable cylinder clamp, and the entire instrument rests atop a lathe-turned wooden stand with a broad foot. Telescopes like this example were employed for dozens of uses such as amateur astronomy, naval mapping, or coast-watching. Size (when collapsed): 13.8" L x 3" W x 14.7" H on included stand (35.1 cm x 7.6 cm x 37.3 cm); (when fully extended): 43.125" L (109.5 cm).

  • Condition: Three internal lenses are missing, so telescope does not function properly. Minor tears and losses to some leather components, light indentations to body and some collapsible components, and minor nicks to wooden stand. Wonderful patina throughout.
