Description:

Northwestern Europe, probably England, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A unique collection of sections of a silver chain with alternating heads of foxes and dogs along the links. The dogs have pinched, bulldog faces and perked ears. The slightly recessed eyes of both animals are painted red and stand out against the silver. At the center of the case is a large fox head that forms the loop clasp for this piece. A wonderful combination of the wily and wild fox with its enemy, the domesticated dog. This certainly was a bold statement piece! Size of segment: 3" L (7.6 cm); size of fox heads: 0.75" L x 0.65" W (1.9 cm x 1.7 cm); size of case: 16.5" L x .875" W x 12.25" H (41.9 cm x 2.2 cm x 31.1 cm); quality of silver: 73% to 82%; total weight: 255.2 grams
