Description:

Western Europe, England or France, ca. 19th century CE. A bold pipe made from two pieces of meerschaum, featuring a nude woman to admire while smoking. The woman sits with her legs slightly spread with one hand resting on her nose, forming a cheeky hand gesture. The pipe passes through her bottom and the tobacco bowl protrudes from her back. Included is the original case for storing this pipe that is lined with silk. Meerschaum is a white clay mineral that was a prized material for pipes and provided a dry and flavorful smoke and the surface would yellow with use. This patina was highly desired and a sign of someone who had plenty of leisure time and wealth. Size: 5.125" L x 1" W x 2" H (13 cm x 2.5 cm x 5.1 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection, acquired 1990 by descent; ex-private East Coast collection, USA, between 1950 to 1960
