Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Northern Europe, England, Counties of Shropshire and Surrey, Onslow and Clandon Park, ca. 19th century CE. An attractive - and quite witty - gold ring fit with a carnelian signet bearing the coat of arms of the Onslow family, along with their motto which was "Festina Lente" meaning "make haste slowly" - a clever play on their surname! The coat of arms is comprised of argent a fess gules between six Cornish choughs proper with a crown denoting the rank of earl above. The earl crown indicates that this ring was created after 1801 when the title of Earl of Onslow was created. The elegant gold band tapers at the opposite side, bearing 3 illegible assay marks on its interior. Size of exterior of ring: 0.9" L x 0.8" W (2.3 cm x 2 cm); of carnelian signet: 0.5" W x 0.6" H (1.3 cm x 1.5 cm); US ring size: 4.75; gold quality: 77.3% (equivalent to over 18 karats); total weight: 8.3 grams
