Description:

Southeast Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th c. A fine embroidered silk thangka of golden autumnal hues on a sunny orange ground with a blue silk patterned backing, the imagery featuring a central image of Shakyamuni seated on a lotus throne with a peaceful meditative gaze, blue hair in tufts w/ gold top-knot and split ears of a prince, gold/orange embroidered floral robes, before a fruited bodhi tree, all on rich brown silk. 4 text panels above. Size: 31" L x 19" W (78.7 cm x 48.3 cm); 50" L x 24" W (127 cm x 61 cm)

Legs folded in vajra posture, Shakyamuni sits on a lotus with one hand in Vitarka mudra (Wheel of Law - symbolizing intellectual argument and discussion), the other holding an alms bowl with a sacred fig from the Bodhi tree. Shakyamuni (Sakyamuni) Buddha also known as Gautam Buddha was born in 563 BCE at Lumbini, in the western part of Nepal. He attained "Bodhi Gyana" enlightenment, that is a state of Nirvana, after six years of meditation. He was then called the enlightened one "Buddha". Shakyamuni died at the age of eighty at Kusinagara. To distinguish from all other Buddhas, he is called Shakyamuni (lion of the Shakya clan), the son of King Suddhodana and Queen Mayadevi. Imagery of the Shakyamuni Buddha is believed to bring peace and enlightenment in believers' bodies and minds. Just over a dozen other Buddhas, sacred figures, and animals accompany Shakyamuni on this thangka.
