Description:

European, Dutch, 19th century, signed at lower left in red "CH. R.M." A stunning marine painting depicting a seaside view with two women peering out from the rocky shoreline. Both women are wearing traditional dress with Dutch clogs, kerchiefs, and layered garments. They hold fishing poles and carry large wicker baskets. The tide ebbs and flows with rolling waves approaching the shore, and two sailboats punctuate the distant horizon line. There is a wonderful element of mystery in this composition, for something has captured the women's attention, causing them to look intensely into the distance. An impressive work, finely painted with delicate brushstrokes and rendering a dramatic scene that captures the disquiet of the sea as well as the immense respect seafaring folk had for its power and the sustenance it provides, set in an attractive custom gilt frame. Size: 21.375" L x 26" W (54.3 cm x 66 cm) Size: 29.125" L x 33.75" W (74 cm x 85.7 cm)

Interestingly, this work resonates with American artist Winslow Homer's paintings that captured the seaside life when he lived in Prout's Neck on the coast of Maine. In a similar vein as this artist, Homer had a passion for demonstrating how weather conditions impacted the ways of fishermen and others who lived by the sea. Furthermore, also parallel to this Dutch seaside painting, Homer's "Two Figures by the Sea" (1882) for example presents a pair of working class women, similarly dressed in kerchiefs and multiple layers of clothing, walking on shore as rough waters approach. While Homer would also create more threatening marine paintings such as "The Life Line" (1884), "Northeaster" (1895), and "The Gulf Stream" (1899), his paintings of ordinary folks living and working by the sea certainly resonate with this composition.

  • Condition: This painting is hand-signed in red pigment on the lower left. The signature is difficult to decipher, but seems to read "CH. R.M." Expected age wear with nice craquelure throughout the painting. Slight impression of central stretcher bar is visible. Frame has some losses with areas of touch up to the finish. Original stretcher bars and expected darkening to the verso of the canvas commensurate with age.
