Description:

Africa, Dakakari culture, Nigeria, ca. 1850 to 1920 CE. This is a pottery ritual libation vessel in the shape of a female human figure with an abstract, elongated head that suggests some kind of transformative zoomorphic properties. The hair, face, and body are clearly decorated, with the hair twisted back in what looks like locs and markings on the face that seem to indicate cicatrization, a very common practice among the Dakakari. Dakakari household pottery is uniform; where their creativity shines is with grave goods like this one, which was made to be used to hold ritual libations for the dead. Size: 8.6" L x 4.25" W (21.8 cm x 10.8 cm).
