Description:

Oceania, Polynesia, Cook Islands, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely adze blade of a sturdy form that is hand-carved from light gray basalt. The tapered tool exhibits a triangular handle with a rounded tip, a rectangular body with an acute top edge and tapered lateral ridges, and a sharpened cutting edge. An adze blade like this example would be secured within a wooden handle body for use in myriad utilitarian tasks like plowing, chopping, and cutting. Size: 5.4" L x 1.625" W (13.7 cm x 4.1 cm)

Provenance: private San Marcos, Texas, USA collection, acquired in Hawaii in the 1940s by grandmother Alberta Wilberger
