Description:

North America, United States, ca. 19th century CE. A fantastic powder horn, comprised of the horn of a cow or bull with a naturally curved body and a tapered spout with hand-carved, raised rings. Polished to a lustrous sheen, the body of the implement is scrimshawed with a series of geometric and phytomorphic motifs. The wooden base plug is fit with an ungulate bone handle attached via a brass screw and incised with a floral motif. Powder horns, such as this fine example, were used by rifleman to hold gunpowder. Size: 14.5" L x 3" W x 3" H (36.8 cm x 7.6 cm x 7.6 cm)
