East Asia, northern China, Shanxi province, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful, lacquered wood cabinet with a shaped skirt and 2 doors attached via brass fittings. The exterior is adorned with coppered garden and figural scenes of people doing various activities among trees, rocks, and pavilions. Boxes like this example were used to hold valuables and special items in wealthy Chinese households. Size: 22.9" L x 10.3" W x 14" H (58.2 cm x 26.2 cm x 35.6 cm)

Provenance: private Truchas, New Mexico, USA collection, acquired in Shanghai, China in 2004 and inspected by officials before importing
