Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A remarkable wooden sculpture of a warrior, likely Guan Yu the Chinese god of war, expertly carved in elaborate detail to be shown standing atop a pedestal of rocks and plants with left foot stepping forward, all enveloped in espresso-hues lacquer with liberal remains of lustrous brass pigments. Crowned by a bulbous headdress with a flame-like spike, the intimidating figure boasts a strong body, heavily adorned in several intricate layers of robes and armor with the image of a fierce serpentine figure adorning his bulging midsection. A long sword is strapped to his side as his left arm bends at the elbow to hold his lengthy, "peerless" beard and moustache and his right arm hangs behind him, its hand grasping a small object, perhaps another weapon. His ovoid visage presents narrowed eyes beneath bushy brows, a broad nose, and a petite mouth, all flanked by a pair of ears with elongated lobes. Size: 6.5" W x 18.7" H (16.5 cm x 47.5 cm)
