Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely wooden tray or plate carved in the shape of a symbolic gourd with leaves and a smaller gourd protruding from the upper edges. The tray rests on a flat base with traces of the original paper backing across much of the black surface. The frontside is carved into a shallow basin, lacquered with a nice red-orange pigment. A hole is pierced through the top near the largest leaf, perhaps to hang this piece on a wall as a display when not in use. Gourds, known as Wu Lou, are part of the Feng Shui belief and represent abundance, health, longevity, and wealth. Size: 13.125" L x 7.5" W (33.3 cm x 19 cm)
