Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A stunning stone shrine featuring Buddha seated upon an altar and draped in cascading robes with his hands in the abhayamudra. Expertly sculpted, the tranquil figure is depicted traditionally with a towering top bun and Mucalinda, king of the nagas, below his feet. Scrolling designs and vegetal motifs are carved in relief, adorning the back of the throne as well as his halo. A Chinese inscription is shown below the figure, likely dedicating this impressive shrine, while the verso displays a relief image of Buddha flanked by followers. This sculpture was made in the tradition of the Northern Qi dynasty from the 6th century CE. Size: 12.5" W x 26.5" H (31.8 cm x 67.3 cm)
