East Asia, China, later Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely yellow opaque stone with a shallow relief carving of a scene of nature on its broadest face. Its flat underside, now coated in red ink from use, features an interlocking abstract motif designed to be used as a unique stamp. Size of stone: 3" W x 2.5" H (7.6 cm x 6.4 cm); size of decorative box: 3.55" L x 4.55" W x 2.1" H (9 cm x 11.6 cm x 5.3 cm)

Provenance: private collection of the late Karming Wong, approximate date of acquisition: late 1970 to early 1980

  • Condition: Stone is in fine condition with rich red deposits of ink on its stamp surface. Rich patina and slight smoothing to motifs from handling and age. Box is in excellent condition with a few light stains from handling.
