Description:

Anonymous (Chinese, 19th century). Taoist god with attendant. Scroll painting on silk, n.d. A wonderful and vibrant painting depicting a god, likely the prosperity deity Luxing, standing beside an attendant who offers him the gift of a stamp seal. Draped in luxurious, layered robes, the god wears an elaborate headdress as he holds his long beard in one hand and places his other hand on the shoulder of his attendant. The brilliant colors of their robes are nicely complemented by a solid, cobalt-hued background. Luxing is one of the Sanxing, the gods of the three celestial bodies considered essential in Chinese astrology and mythology: Jupiter, Ursa Major, and Canopus. The others are Fuxing, the god of fortune, and Shouxing, the god of longevity. Size of image: 33.5" W x 60.8" H (85.1 cm x 154.4 cm); of unrolled scroll: 38.2" W x 82.6" H (97 cm x 209.8 cm); of rolled scroll: 42.6" L x 3" Diameter (108.2 cm x 7.6 cm)

Luxing is also worshipped separately from the other two as the deity dictating one's success in the imperial examinations, and therefore success in the imperial bureaucracy.
