Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. An impressive hand-carved wooden cylindrical column with an openwork body of an intricately twisting dragon and robed figures. Swirling cloud shapes fill the gaps between the dragon's body, and the top rim flares slightly outward around a wide opening and the narrow base has a simple rod attachment handle added in recent times. This piece was probably part of an ornate table leg or incense pillar, and the wood has developed a nice dark patina and traces of glimmering golden pigments remain, indicating this may have been brightly painted at one time. Size: 15" L x 2.5" W (38.1 cm x 6.4 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, 1995 to 2010; ex-M. Kobiashi collection, Hawaii, USA, 1960 to 2000
