Description:

East Asia, China, later Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A stunning, ornately carved nephrite jade brush washer, used by a scholar writing with ink. It is in the form of a curled lotus leaf; below it is a wooden stand, curved into the form of the lingzhi fungus. The lotus leaf is an important symbol of Buddhism, while the lingzhi mushroom is used in traditional Chinese medicine. Qing dynasty scholar-officials - academically educated in calligraphy and Confucianism - were the people who performed all day to day political duties in China from the Han Dynasty to the end of the Qing; following the Sui dynasty, most were of elite social status and formed a class of their own, which (they claimed) represented morality and virtue. The beautiful objects that they used to execute their duties are lasting reminders of a group of people who were integral to Chinese history for almost two millennia. Size: 3.4" W x 2.2" H (8.6 cm x 5.6 cm)
