Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved elephant ivory snuff jar with a tiger's eye stone stopper and an attached bone spatula. The front is high relief carved with a cicada insect on a pomegranate tree branch - the bulbous fruit and leaves outspread below. The spidery openwork legs of the cicada span the surface - requiring amazing skill to carve this from a single piece of ivory! The tiger eye graining matches the ivory patina, and a cork with the bone spatula attached to the underside facilitated scooping the powdered contents. Remains of tobacco are still contained inside! Size: 1.75" L x 1" W x 3" H (4.4 cm x 2.5 cm x 7.6 cm)
