East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. An impressive and sizeable sculpture, skillfully hand-carved from a single piece of chocolate brown-hued wood to display the image of a female dancer beneath a lotus flower. Wearing a rounded cap, a robe tied at the waist, pants, and slippers, the jovial figure poses dynamically, balancing on her left foot as she carries a petite object in her right hand and raises her left hand high above her head. Her cheerful visage turns slightly to her right, displaying slender eyes beneath high arching brows, a broad nose, a protruding upper lip, a spirited smile, and a pointed chin, all flanked by a pair of lengthy ears. A tall lotus flower towers above her with its sinuous vines stretching outward and lengthy leaves drooping so low that they graze her cap. Note the artist's careful attention to detail, evident in the openwork ornaments that embellish the figure's headdress, the zigzag hems of her robe, and the textured petals of the flower. Size: 9" W x 28" H (22.9 cm x 71.1 cm); 29.1" H (73.9 cm) on included custom stand.
